Application engineering is the art of selecting the right equipment for the performance of a specific duty, this goes beyond selecting an equipment merely based on power, voltage, enclosure, efficiency or torque requirements.
Technical aspects are often inadequately managed because personnel involved in equipment specification are not familiar enough with the manufacturing standards and/or with the specific norms that exist for certain industries, such as API or IEEE 841 in the case of petroleum applications.
Moreover, lack of the necessary knowledge and experience concerning characteristics and performance can make a big difference in evaluating efficient operation of the apparatus.
FLOPOWER has a strong background in the art of application engineering, measured by many years of accumulated experience that is not easily acquired or transmitted and which we put at the service of our customers.
Customers are often faced with the need of modernizing their facilities or improving a certain application, an action known as retrofit. Generally, this need for a retrofit comes from some or the combination of the following:
The existing apparatus is obsolete and/or the original manufacturer no longer exists. The existing apparatus was originally improperly specified, leading to recurring failures. An existing motor is inefficient or has lost efficiency due to multiple rewinds.
The customer needs to install an adjustable-speed drive and the existing distribution system was not designed for it.
What is the difficulty?
When a retrofit is made, the customer usually expects the replacement to be fully interchangeable with the existing apparatus. Also, it is expected that auxiliary services (electrical connections, control and protection signals, and even water supply) need no modification.
In the case of electric motors, retrofitting is not a simple task, it requires reengineering to design a motor that mechanically replaces the existing one without needs of modification and to electrically ensure that the new motor fulfills application requirements and standards.
Our Engineering Department has extensive experience accumulated over the years developing all kinds of retrofits for any application.

Most electrical apparatus such as motors, adjustable-speed drives, starters, and transformers are cooled in some way by air. Also, in the case of starters and adjustable-speed drives, the air acts as a dielectric between the live parts.
Installing apparatus at heights beyond 1000 meters above sea level requires this factor to be considered on the specification process. Air density and atmospheric pressure vary as a function of altitude. As that increases, both density and pressure decrease.
Standard electric motors manufactured under NEMA and IEC standards are designed to work up to 1,000 meters (3,300 ft.) of altitude. Adjustable-speed drives and standard starters are also designed to work at a specific maximum altitude, usually between 1,000 and 1,500 meters above sea level depending on the apparatus manufacturer.
Our Engineering Department has extensive experience designing and specifying electrical apparatus to work at high altitudes. Many of our customers (mainly mining companies) who rely on FLOPOWER to specify electrical apparatus for use at altitudes that sometimes exceed 4,000 meters above sea level.

Torque, like inertia, is an essential element to consider when specifying and dimensioning an electric motor. We tend to think that what turns the shaft is the power expressed in hp or kW, when it is actually torque that causes rotation.
Torque requirements for industrial applications fall into two categories: the so called variable torque applications and constant torque applications. Among the former, we find centrifugal pumps, fans, blowers and centrifugal compressors; while conveyor belts, mills, extruders, positive displacement pumps, screw and reciprocating compressors, and some others, are considered constant torque applications.
Why can torque become a problem?
When starting, the motor must develop enough torque to break the load away from rest, then accelerate it to full speed. If the curve of developed motor torque vs. speed and the curve of required load torque vs. speed intersect each other below full speed, the motor will either stall or fail to reach full speed.
The starter/motor system must be specified appropriately to avoid start up and acceleration problems, as this situation often leads to huge economic losses.

What is inertia?
Inertia is the resistance of a physical object to any change in its state of motion (including changes in velocity or direction of motion). High inertia involves one of the most complex applications in the industry. If the motor and starting method are not well specified, the result can be disastrous.
High inertia applications involve large centrifugal fans, loaded mills, and reciprocating compressors. A high inertia load causes the driving motor to take longer to reach full speed from rest; that time will vary depending on the load inertia and rated speed, as well as the torque generated by the motor.
Why can inertia become a problem?
Before an induction motor reaches its rated speed, the current drawn during acceleration will be several times (5 to 7 times) its rated current (FLA). This is not a problem unless the load torque and inertia combine to cause excessive heating in the stator winding and rotor, with temperature rising to levels that can cause catastrophic damage to the rotor.
Such are the concerns to be taken into account when starting a high inertia load. The starter/motor system must be appropriately specified to avoid start up problems and possible premature failures that often lead to huge economic losses.
